Size and installation

Find a size before you order.

Use the room you are lighting. Every height below is written in inches and centimetres. The ranges are a starting point, not a single required size.

Usual ceiling: 9–10 ft (2.7–3.0 m). A slope: 12–16 ft (3.7–4.9 m), sometimes about 5 m. Measure a table light from the table. Where people walk, leave 7 ft (2.1 m) under the light. That is headroom, not the ceiling.

Measure the surface

Measure the table, island, sink, desk, mirror, or the path people walk. If a table is there, size the fixture from the table.

Start with the range

Use the width and the height below as a starting point. Then compare one size smaller and one size larger against the product drawing.

Check it in the room

Mark the width and the lowest point with painter’s tape. Look from a seat and from the doorway before anyone drills.

Room-by-room guide

Choose a space.

Select the setup closest to your room and jump to its measurements. Open shades and rattan read lighter than a solid porcelain shade of the same width.

Living Room

Add the length and the width of the open room. A light over a coffee table or dining table uses that table’s rule.

Light widthAdd the two walls in feet. 12 + 14 = 26 in (66 cm) across.

In metresAdd the metres, then × 8.3. (3.7 + 4.3) × 8.3 = 66 cm.

Headroom7 ft (2.1 m) under the light. A 9 ft ceiling allows 24 in (61 cm) of depth.

The room is 12 ft by 14 ft, to scale. The circle is the 26 in diameter from 12 + 14, also to scale. In metres that is (3.7 + 4.3) × 8.3 = 66 cm.

Kitchen Island

Measure the counter where people stand. Leave out the overhang.

Above the counter30–36 in (76–91 cm) from the counter to the bottom of the shade.

Each end6–12 in (15–30 cm) from the shade to the counter end. Match both ends.

Between shadesAbout 24 in (61 cm) of open space, edge to edge.

72 in (183 cm) counter

Two shades, each 12 in (30 cm). Leave 12 in at each end and 24 in between them. The bottoms hang 33 in (84 cm) above the counter.

Same scale throughout: 4 px per inch. 12 in shades, 12 in ends, 24 in between the shades, 72 in overall. The drop is 33 in, inside 30–36 in (76–91 cm).

Over the Sink

Use one light, centered on the basin.

Shade widthNo wider than the basin. A 20 in (51 cm) basin takes up to 14 in (36 cm).

Above the counter30–36 in (76–91 cm). The drawing uses 33 in (84 cm).

Center lineOn the basin, in line with the faucet.

If the globe hits the window, use a shorter shade or a semi-flush mount.

To scale: the globe is 14 in across, the basin is 20 in, and the dashed line is their shared center. The bottom sits 33 in above the counter.

Dining Table

Size the light from the table. People sitting across from each other should see each other, not the bulb.

Above the table30–36 in (76–91 cm). The drawing uses 33 in (84 cm), above her eyes.

Shade widthHalf to two-thirds of the table. A 60 in (152 cm) table takes 30–40 in (76–102 cm).

This drawingA 36 in (91 cm) shade, centered on the 60 in table.

A table longer than 72 in (183 cm) needs two or three pendants, about 24 in (61 cm) apart, inside the ends of the table.

To scale on the 60 in table: a 36 in shade, inside the top, ending 33 in above it. Her eye line sits below the shade.

Bathroom Vanity

Put a sconce on each side of the mirror, level with the face.

Sconce center65–70 in (165–178 cm) above the floor. The drawing uses 67 in (170 cm).

Off the mirror3–6 in (8–15 cm) from the mirror edge. The drawing uses 4 in (10 cm).

No side wallUse a bar about 3/4 of the mirror. A 30 in (76 cm) mirror takes a 22 in (56 cm) bar.

Look in the mirror before wiring. Move the sconce if you can see the bulb.

To scale: mirror 30 in wide, 4 in from each edge to the sconce, centers 67 in above the floor. Her face is at that height.

Bathroom Ceiling

On the walk from the door to the vanity, the light’s depth comes from the ceiling height.

CeilingUsually 9–10 ft (2.7–3.0 m). A slope is often 12–16 ft (3.7–4.9 m).

9 ft ceilingDeepest light is 24 in (61 cm). That leaves 7 ft (2.1 m) of headroom.

10 ft ceilingDeepest light is 36 in (91 cm). On a slope, keep the light up at the ceiling.

The drawing is the 9 ft case. Over a tub, where nobody walks, hang 30–36 in (76–91 cm) above the rim. Use a bathroom-rated fixture.

Other lengthsDivide by 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m) and round to a whole number of lights. Each end is half that spacing.

Keep both ends equal. The ceiling is usually 9–10 ft (2.7–3.0 m). Keep the light up at the ceiling, with 7 ft (2.1 m) of headroom under it.

Both halls use the same scale. Each end is half the center spacing. 20 ÷ 3 = 6 ft 8 in. 12 ÷ 2 = 6 ft. The ceiling is usually 9–10 ft (2.7–3.0 m). This drawing is the count, not the ceiling height.

Home Office

The drawing is a lamp beside the chair. A pendant over the desk uses a different height.

Kids’ Room

The open floor and the table use different heights.

Open floorOn a 9 ft (2.7 m) ceiling, the light is at most 24 in (61 cm) deep.

Headroom7 ft (2.1 m) under that light. A 10 ft ceiling allows 36 in (91 cm) of depth.

On a slope, leave the open-floor light at the ceiling. Keep cords out of reach. This drawing has no bed.

Outdoor

A covered table uses the indoor table sizes. The walk beside it is a separate light.

Shade widthHalf to two-thirds of the table. This 60 in (152 cm) table uses 36 in (91 cm).

Above the table33 in (84 cm) in the drawing, inside 30–36 in (76–91 cm).

Rain needs a wet-location mark. A covered porch is often damp. The product page says which.

Before it is installed

Use the range as a start. Confirm the final spot in the room, then hand the wiring to someone qualified.

01 Fit

Look from the main seats and from the doorway. Keep doors, cabinets, and walking paths clear. On the product page, separate shade size from the minimum hanging height.

02 Support

Confirm the fixture weight and that the junction box and hardware can carry it. Heavy fixtures may need extra bracing.

03 The room and the voltage

Follow the instructions supplied with the fixture. In a bathroom or outdoors, use a fixture rated for that spot. Orders ship set for the voltage of the destination. Do not rewire a fixture to change the voltage.
